Mom: He gave me his cell phone number and is talking about meeting.

J: I think you should do it. Take the risk and jump in.

Mom: Did I mention he gave me his cell phone number? I feel like I'm back in high school. LMAO

J: Just call him and talk to him over the phone. Then work out some kind of meeting.

*WOW I never thought I would be trying to talk my own mother into going on a potential date. Something about this just doesn’t feel right*

I can't believe how alone I feel right now. Not in the depressive kind of way. But after 5 days with not only a roommate (or two at times) You go Barry.

But also being around 3000 other gay men in a very small space, I can't decide what to do tonight.

I have cleaned up put on my new South Beach Tshirt and was going to meet [info]hellofafit tonight as he was supposed to get back from swamp ass but he just informed me he is stuck in hell another week.

So I could stay home with the dogs, or go out for a little while and see who is out.

Actually what I wouldn't mind doing, but won't is take the book I started on the plane, go to the bar find a corner and have a couple cocktails read and people watch as they look at me wondering WTF???

Hell must Have frozen over [Jul. 18th, 2008|03:30 pm]

[mood | chipper]

Hell must have frozen over as well, I'm posting. Guess i've been a bit busy in the past six months, hasn't really felt that long, but the LJ doesn't lie and it appear i've updated twice since I started working. Well let me recap the long and twisted road and maybe attempt to justify why i've just been "too busy" to post.

Well January 21st I started in the inserting department with about 6 crazy women, not that all women are crazy these women literally are crazy, which made for very colourful and adventurous days of putting together flyers and papers.

Some time about 2 months back now I guess, I was promoted to floor captain, a sort of shift leader role, though as luck would have it, the bindery operator smashed his hand in the machine two days later, and i was moved to bindery to fill in for him. Luckily for him, i'm a quick learner and well he was really lazy so I was effectively doing his job for him in under a week and well he just sat on his ass. While this was going on, he was demanding more money for a wage, and well was throwing all sorts of fits, as managment still expected him to do some work, while his "soft tissue" damage healed. Well it was so stressful that he left on vacation and they brought in a pressman to be supervisor in bindery, I was left to run the bindery as Supervisor and operator 2 where unable to keep the machine going. come on people this is not rocket science.

During that week, new supervisor guy, changed many things, most good, in order to make the department better, like cleaning out the place, as the paper dust tends to pile up quickly, making the department clock out for lunch, and going so far as to turn off the internet except for e-mail in the department. Well all of this was too much for mr crushed hand, so he quickly quit.... a week later, bindery minion number 2 quit as it was the first time in a year that he had a full 80 hours plus 2 hours of over time on his check and this was just too much. So he quit, leaving new supervisor and myself to run it, no problem... well a big job, about 150 thousand books came in, in addition to our regular stuff, so 12 and 13 hour days were needed, well new Sup, just couldn't handle the stress put on him, so he quit a week or so later. Leaving me all alone in the department with only about 2 months of working on the machine. Lets just say the next month or so was, very stressful, so much that i lost about 10lbs and started to have nightmares about work.

Well after talking with bossman, he brought in an operator from another bindery to work part time and educate me, (or rather he laughed at bossman when he was shown the wage and instead opted for part time as he has an expensive car to pay for) well the clouds parted and the flood gates of knowledge opened and the machine was running like i had only imagined. And ever since I've been dealing with a back logg of work, hence the 12-18 hour days i've been working, coupled with spending a few thousand dollars on new parts to rehibalitate the poor machine, the last operator didn't believe in maintenance or lubrication, not good things for machinary or for husbands.

So now after all of this excitement in the fast paced world of printing and publishing I'm finally able to keep my head above the water and maybe have enough time to check my email more then once a week, and my body has adapted so that I don't just eat and sleep in addition to work, hell I've lost 50lbs since the start of the year. And broken into the world of lower level management, as soon as the paper work goes through, with the damn government, i'm officially a supervisor, hell it may even get me a shirt with my name on it, if that doesn't scream ego trip I don't know what does.

So thats about whats been going on with me, in addition to some more home renovations here and there, some auto repair, our one year wedding anniversary, a few holidays, and well i think that about sums it up, I promise dear LJ that I will attempt to update you more often, and not fall off the face of the planet, well maybe just once a week.

Ohhh on a total geeky side note, Tim introduced me to the soap opera that is Babylon 5, omg I'm so sucked in.... thats it.

Better late than never, right?

Finally at my desk today after a morning with a new doctor and then lunch with the litigation associates.  It’s nearly 2.  Time flies when you’re something something something…

So this new doctor is kinda cool.  He’s about 600 years younger than my last doctor (the doctor old enough to know gawd), his office is walking distance from my apartment (even when the temperature is hovering near 100 degrees), he’s got a cute receptionist called Gary, and he didn’t charge me any money.

I did, unfortunately, have to get naked.  The doctor did not return the favor.  My blood pressure is high, my weight is staggeringly high (nearly fourteen thousand pounds), and my desire to deal with some of my issues is high.  He was very positive about options and scheduled me to come back to see him next Thursday.

The woman in the basement took a lot of blood.  A LOT of blood: 8 of those chemistry lab vials full of blood.  She just kept sticking them onto the little plastic cord that was attached to the little hollow needle that was sucking blood out of me like Milehigh33 in a bathhouse.  Then she had me pee in a cup.  That was kinda fun.  The whole experience lasted just under two hours.  I think I’m going to like him.

We discussed my drinking and my weight and my blood pressure and his boyfriend of 25 years and Milehigh33 who was kind enough to refer me to him in the first place.  He complimented me on being cuter than Milehigh33, and nicer, and then stuck this plastic thing in my mouth and ran it around under my lips and cheeks for about 30 seconds.  Turns out he wasn’t flirting but was giving me one of those instant HIV checks.  And as luck would have it, I’m still HIV free.

Does every sexually active homosexual have that little twinge of anxiety in the back of their minds when they get an AIDS test?  I’m betting it’s true.  We’re all fairly careful—some more than others—but you can never be totally sure…  But who’s kidding whom?  Liver disease is going to kill me far quicker than anything my dick might ultimately do…

Watched Hopkins on ABC last night and cried heavily over this little boy called Peyton who’s heart suddenly failed and nearly died.  It’s a surprisingly good show—I recommend it.

So there is no trip to Asbury Park this weekend.  Mark and Robbie took possession of their kitchen cabinets this week—all seventeen large boxes of them.  Thus, there is no room for any fun at their house, not to mention the disarray the kitchen is obviously going to be in.  This means I suddenly have no plans.  My friend Katie wants to go see Christopher’s show (Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind) but I’ve seen the damn thing about twelve times this year and just don’t feel up to it.  We’ll see.

But Mama just got paid, so lock up the menfolk and the sheep—I’m a’coming out!

Question of the Day:  Do you like your doctor?

Miami the rest of the story [Jul. 18th, 2008|10:34 am]

rbradkc
I don't know what all to write about when it comes to Miami.

Our performance (which I already described) was just so amazing the rest of the week was kind of a blur.

Tuesday it rained most of the day, so we stayed near the hotels, but also watched some amazing performances.

Columbus (which I took pictures of) danced their entire time singing songs of Elton John. I cried big time during "The Last Song" and jumped up and down when they did a costume change and all came back out in Elton glasses and over the top coats.

The group from Dublin (I can listen to them talk to me all day and night long) was great, they did a choral arrangement of Clapton's If I Could Change the World. WOW.
Then we listened to Seattle. HOLY FUCKING SHIT. They rocked. They did one song about the sins of semen being wasted and the ASL interprator had us all rolling on the floor in hysterics.

Tuesday night was this huge party put on my Boston at a near by club. It was easy to get lost but their drinks were $10 I dropped way to much cash the entire week. So my friends and I left their around 2am, and I crashed.

Wednesday was my last full day, by this time it was pretty clear that my best friend was not going to check his voice mail and it was pretty clear that his mother had indeed passed away. So we decided some retail therapy was in order. I wanted to go to the beach, he wanted to find shoes. I didn't know South BEach had this great outdoor pedestrian mall. I found a cute little new swim suit (cheap) and a ballcap and shirt combo. Then we happened upon the Swatch Store. Totally forgot about swatch. They had this awesome pendant, I got my niece her first swatch for her 11th Birthday. Has faeries on the band and pink bling on the face. While we were in swatch the heavens opened up on us and it just downpoured. We found a pizza place then walked in the rain after it let up.

It was getting late, and I wanted to touch the ocean. So we walked over to the beach and waded around in the surf until another storm rolled in. We caught a cab back to the hotel (famous phone eating cab). Where we showered and changed to go to the nights GALA event. http://www.parrotjungle.com/ they had food and drink stations set up all over the park with live animals (also see pictures) I think we stayed until 10pm and I went back to the hotel. I went up changed into my new swim suit and went to the pool where by the time I left at around 2am there were over 200 men in and around the pool.

Thursday I got up and started packing, I checked on the location of said lost phone to no avail. Went back up stairs kicked my roommates weeklong trick out of bed and made Barry get up and start packing as well. We got him moved to another room where he was staying the rest of the week and I headed to the airport.

And that in a nutshell was GALA 2008 in Miami.

I had a great time. Did my own thing at times, hung out with friends at others, and met lots of new people from around the US and the globe. If I stay in chorus over the next 4 years or in a Gay Chorus if I move I hope I will be able to attend GALA again where ever it is.

*this morning the news was all a twitter… big breaking news. HUGE it seemed… they announced which Starbucks will be closing. HORRORS! I’ve never been to a Starbucks, apparently I should go before the 1 that is closing in San Jose shuts it’s doors… forever!!!

*driving to work, happily singing along with Annie Lennox to There Must Be an Angel (Playing with my Heart) la la la la la la la laaaaaa la la laaa! I realized that things really *are* changing with increased gas prices… there are SO many people riding bikes to work who look like they haven’t been on a bike in 20 years. This one guy this morning, uber cute I have to say, was wobbling like his bike was gonna tip over any second, looking mighty nervous as he rode down the Alameda. Bless his little heart but it did give me the giggles something fierce.

*Bob and I have been watching episodes of a couple of ummm.. what are they? Period soap operas? One is Swingtown… a more fluffy soap about swinger couples in the 70’s (Grant Show in a sexy 70s stache yum!) and the other is Mad Men about advertising guys in the early 60s. I am kind of liking them both… even tho they are soaps there are some pretty cool looks at life in the 60s and 70s (yay, Tupperware parties and advocado & burnt orange everywhere!). Mad Men seems to be the more realistic of the two and just blows me away with how women and minorities are treated and such. And damn… it’s so weird to see *everyone* smoking LOL What a different world we live in almost 50 years later.

*I finally remembered the plans Bob made that I keep forgetting… we’re going to dinner at Ty and Tim’s tonite and prolly playing cards. It really should be fun but I was hoping to go out tonite too. Maybe on our way home after dinner I spose.

Alrighty tighty… everyone have a good weekend. See ya’s on the internets.

Back on the grid [Jul. 18th, 2008|10:03 am]

rbradkc
Sitting in an airplane all day and airport chairs does a number to your back, took me a while to get to sleep last night. For once I think the hotel bed was better than my own.

When I got home, the dogs were so super excited to see me. I thought the puppy was going to platz she was so excited, that is always nice to have. Since I didn't have a man to great me, the dogs were the next best thing, and they licked me just the same to show thier affection.

I tried to get my insurance moving along on my phone and turn my old one back on last night. However I couldn't do the insurance deal because they were closed for the night, and couldn't switch phones until that had happened.

I got up bright and early this morning, came to work so I could use a phone and a fax machine if they needed me to send an affidavit of course they didn't need it, but I still used the phone.

15min later and 5 different people my old Treo is turned back on and I can TEXT my friends again.

a little update....about my Bootie. [Jul. 17th, 2008|09:36 pm]

boyshapedbox
[Tags|, , ]

It's August, and [info]nobora and I packed up her truck and started our roadtrip to the West. We just graduated college that May and this trip was going to be awesome. Before leaving Emily gave me a CD to rip and put on my iPod, a CD made for her my a close friend in Savannah.

"Nathan's Good Mashups"

I popped in the CD and the first track that played was Jay-Z vs. Billy Joel "Big Shot Pimpin'" by The Brat.

My mind was blown. I knew both of these songs, and they both fit SO WELL on top of each other! This wasn't like a remix where it was familiar but still brand new. This was different. The ADD in me LOVED being able to listen to two songs at the same time and pick them apart, deciphering the 2+ layers of audio in my head.

Next up was Janis Joplin vs. Beck "Mercedes Beck" by Lenlow. I couldn't believe how well they fit.

My love of mash ups started with that roadtrip. We listened to that CD over and over and over again.

When I was looking for mash ups on the internet while I was in Seattle for 2 weeks (before moving to SF) I came across this website. www.bootisf.com
A small once a month club night at The Cherry Bar in San Francisco. An entire night dedicated to this little niche musical genre. Bootie. Bootlegs. Bastard Pop. This place was dedicated to it once a month.

My friend Jeremiah and I, the last saturday in September 2005, ventured to The Cherry Bar for Bootie, and as I walked in I was in awe at the amount of people there. Jay-Z vs Nina "99 Luft Problems" by Jay-Zena was playing and we made our way to the dancefloor. That was the night I met [info]ca_thunder, Killer Bob and his partner Rick, and my friends Rich and Chris. I went every month after that.

Going to Bootie made me start seeking out Mash ups from all over the internet. I would get the free Bootie CD for coming early to the club and would later search all the artists to try and find more. I loved that they were all so different, some TERRIBLE, but some just genius in execution. I would watch people's faces light up when they heard the next mash up come on, everyone in unison trying to figure out what the acapella and instrumentals were.

Bootie moved from the Cherry Bar/Annie's Social Club, to the DNA Lounge, to now being so popular it is a twice monthly party PACKING the club. There is also a Bootie LA, Bootie NYC, Bootie Paris, Bootie Munich, Bootie Boston, Bootie Hong Kong, Bootie Copenhagen, and during Burning Man, Bootie Black Rock City.

Mike Snyder, a DJ friend of a friend moved down to SF from Seattle and stayed temporarily in the living room of the place where I would crash when I didn't want to take Bart all the way back to Albany. He set up his 2 CDJ's and his mixer, and one day let me play around with them. He was a little taken back at my ability to (mostly...I was still beginning) beat match and understand songs structures. I let him in on the little secret that when I was going to Raves, in between dancing you could always find me next to the DJ booth watching what the DJ was doing, mentally trying to figure out WHY and WHEN he was doing what he was doing. I figured it out but didn't have the money for equipment so I was never able to try it myself....not until 7 years later on Mike's decks.

When Mike asked me what I wanted to spin I blurted out "Mash Ups." It didn't take much thought but all I knew was I wanted to make a crowd light up and see that look on people's faces when you take two things very familiar to them and completely reinvent it for them.

And I wanted to spin at Bootie.

Flash forward 2 years, this past Saturday I finally got to do just that.

Mattacuda, who performs sometimes for Bootie's MIDNIGHT MASH UP SHOW mentioned me to Adrian and Mysterious D (the bootie founders) and they booked me for the back room. The back room always has a theme and for my night it was "The New Blood Lounge" where DJ Boyshapedbox and DJ Big Dolla, two bootie virgin's would spin for the first time. I did the visuals for Bootie a few months ago so I already knew A & D, but getting to DJ for them I finally got to bond and get to know them.

They LOVED my set, and the feedback has been stellar! Adrian came up to me later in the evening after I was finished and said, "A few people came up to me and asked 'do you book the dj's?' and I was like 'uhhh...yeah, I have a little to do with that' and they told me that I HAD to have boyshapedbox back ASAP." I was floored. "We will be having you back as soon as possible. You were wonderful and have the exact sound we've been looking for. You just get it. I don't know if it's that you've come to Bootie so much but you play the kind of mash ups that keeps the floor and the energy going."

And when I emailed them the next day to say thanks, they replied:

"We LOVED having you, and will definitely be roping you into more Bootie gigs. You are WARNED!"

It was amazing.

It was also my heterosexual debut. I realized mid-set that I couldn't remember the last time I'd DJed for straight people at a club. Oh that's right. Up until then I hadn't.
